Configurations

The Configuration page manages backup coverage across your fleet and provides tools for bulk restore operations.

Backup Coverage

The backup coverage card shows how many devices have current configuration backups:

StatusMeaningAction
CoveredA current backup exists matching the device’s firmware versionNo action needed
StaleA backup exists but was taken on an older firmware versionRe-run backup to capture current config
No BackupNo configuration backup has been takenRun a backup immediately
FailedThe last backup attempt failedCheck device connectivity and retry
v6SonicWall Gen 6 device (backup not supported via API)Manual backup required

Running a Fleet Backup

Click Fleet Backup to back up all eligible devices in your fleet. This creates a new operation that:

  1. Connects to each device
  2. Exports the full configuration
  3. Encrypts and stores the backup
  4. Reports success/failure per device

You can track progress on the Operations page.

Backup Storage

Configuration backups are stored encrypted on the SonicSaaS server. Each device retains up to 50 backups (configurable). Older backups are automatically cleaned up by the retention policy.

Backup storage location is configurable:

  • Local filesystem (default for self-hosted)
  • FTP server (when FTP integration is configured)

Fleet Restore

The restore card provides tools to restore devices to a previous configuration:

  1. Navigate to Configuration → Fleet Restore
  2. Select the devices to restore
  3. Choose a backup snapshot for each device
  4. Confirm the restore operation

Each device will be restored to its selected configuration and rebooted. The operation is tracked with full audit logging.

Best Practices

  • Backup before firmware updates — Always ensure a current backup exists before upgrading firmware. The firmware scheduler can do this automatically.
  • Regular backup schedule — Configure automated backups via Schedules to maintain coverage.
  • Test restores — Periodically verify that backups can be successfully restored.
  • Monitor coverage — Use the Fleet Overview dashboard to track backup coverage trends.
